Neonatal and NICU support programs

Neonatal Resource Services (NRS) helps to ensure the right treatment at the right time for the right level of acuity. It helps reduce health plan costs and provide fragile newborns and their families with the best possible start  to their lives together.

One in 9 newborns covered by commercial health insurance are born prematurely.* NRS offers specialized care designed to improve neonatal outcomes by providing:

  • Utilization management and provider decision support to reduce costs for infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or special special-care nursery by assuring appropriate length of stay and mitigating readmissions
  • Case management support for families’ safe and timely discharge to home, and up to 12 months of age, based on acuity
  • Utilization management and case management of a fragile newborn’s needs from admission to the NICU to post-discharge
  • Engagement and education for families, with durable  medical equipment, home health care and community resource planning, to reduce unplanned readmissions

NRS outcomes**:

  • 7.9% reduction in length of stay (LOS)
  • 27% reduction in NICU readmission LOS
  • 99% consumer satisfaction
  • 2–4:1 return on investment
